(SYSU, CN) From Theory to Practice: Sun Yat-sen University Enhances AI Education with Robots-Equipped Robotics Lab

At the Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), the School of Artificial Intelligence has launched the course "Principles of Robotics Laboratory" , covering robot actuation, perception, and control. Professor Tianqi Wei, a researcher in robotics and intelligent control, serves as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Neurorobotics and reviews for leading journals and conferences such as Robotica, IROS, and IEEE RA-L. He emphasizes blending advanced theory with practical engineering skills. SYSU aimed to build a practice-oriented robotics lab by introducing diverse equipment and fostering deeper industry-education integration.

After evaluating many options, the university selected our cobots and AI Kits for its affordability, ease of use, and all-in-one Raspberry Pi-based design. The kit operates independently with just a keyboard, mouse, and monitor—no laptop needed—reducing setup time and instructional costs, making it suitable for university laboratories and large-scale teaching.

SYSU procured 16 units of myCobot and 16 units of AI Kits, assigning one per group of four students. Teachers developed customized lab content to align with the kit’s features. In class, students use the compact, open-source platform to explore topics like motion control, path planning, and system integration. Beyond technical skills, the hands-on projects foster teamwork, problem-solving, and deeper understanding of robotics fundamentals, supporting SYSU’s goal of advancing both academic knowledge and practical training.
